The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has declared a Fix-a-Leak Week this March to remind people to check plumbing fixtures for leaks. Consider the following:
- If a toilet is running constantly, it could be wasting 200 gallons of water or more every day.
- A showerhead leaking at 10 drips per minute wastes more than 500 gallons per year. (That's enough water to wash 60 loads in a dishwasher!)
- Besides wasting water, leaky faucets or showerheads could be wasting energy, as warm water is heated here on campus with natural gas.
At UMD, our water comes from Lake Superior- a big resource, but definitely not something to be wasted! If you come across a leaking faucet, showerhead, or toilet at UMD, please report it as soon as you can:
- In your dorms or apartment, report a leak directly to housing staff.
- In campus bathrooms, laboratory, or classrooms, contact Facilities Management at 726-8262.
